You are my sunshine
written by Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell
1939

[ Verse 1:
The o-ther night dear / as I lay slee-ping /
I dreamt I held you in my arms /
When I a-woke dear / I was mis-taken /
So I hung my head and cried ]

[ Chorus:
You are my sun-shine / my on-ly sun-shine /
You make me hap-py / when skies are grey /
You’ll ne-ver know dear / how much I love you /
Please don’t take / my sun-shine a-way ]

[ Verse 2:
I’ll al-ways love you / and make you hap-py /
If you will on-ly do the same /
But if you leave me / to love a-nother /
You’ll re-gret it all some day ]

[ Chorus ]

[ Verse 3:
You told me once dear / you real-ly loved me /
And no one else could come be-tween /
But now you’ve left me / to love a-nother /
You have shat-tered all of my dreams ]

Bist du’s, lachendes Glück
from the 1909 operetta “Der Graf von Luxemburg”
Music by Franz Lehar
German libretto by Alfred Willner, Robert Bodanzky, and Leo Stein

Lyrics:

Translated into English by Liliane & Varner Nickle:

Bist du’s, lachendes Glück, das jetzt vorüber schwebt,
It’s you, the laughing happiness, which is now floating past,
is this the sweet, golden dream that one lives through only once?
Sagt nicht alles in mir, sei gescheit,
Do not say anything to me, be wise,
heute winkt dir das Glück.
for you, today beckons you the bliss.
Versäum’, verträum’ ich die Zeit,
If I missed, then dream away the time,
sehnst umsonst dann zurück,
wasted yearning but back again,
die Lieb’ in Lust und Leid.
such as the love in joy and sorrow.

Phrasing:

Bist du’s / la-chen-des Glück / das jetzt vor-ü-ber schwebt /
ist das der süs-se / gol-di-ge Traum / den man nur ein-mal lebt /
Sagt nicht al-les in mir / sei ge-scheit /
heu-te winkt dir das Glück /
Ver-säum’ ver-träum’ ich die Zeit /
sehn-st um-sonst dann zu-rück /
die Lieb’ in Lust und Leid!

[ Instrumental:
Bist du’s / la-chen-des Glück / das jetzt vor-ü-ber schwebt/
ist das der süs-se / gol-di-ge Traum / den man nur ein-mal lebt / ]
Sagt nicht al-les in mir / sei ge-scheit /
heu-te winkt dir das Glück /
Ver-säum’ ver-träum’ ich die Zeit /
sehn-st um-sonst dann zu-rück /
die Lieb’ in Lust und Leid!

Bésame Mucho (Kiss me a lot /
Composed by Consuelo Velázquez, Mexican songwriter, at the age of 15
1940

Translated into English

Kiss me, kiss me a lot,
As if tonight were the last time,
Kiss me, kiss me a lot,
For I am afraid of losing you, losing you afterwards.

I want to hold you close,
to see myself in your eyes, to see you next to me,
Thinking that maybe tomorrow
I will already be far, very far from you.

Phrasing

[ Chorus:

Several years ago, student leaders in Maestro Ren’s voice class decided to name the student recital series “乘著歌聲的翅膀,” or “On the Wings of Song.”

The name, as many have probably guessed, was taken from the title of German composer Felix Mendelssohn’s famous lieder, “Auf Flügeln des Gesanges.” It was an inspired name for a recital series.

I came up with a flyer and program that included images of Baroque era “Recording Angels.” It looked pretty good. Over the years however, both the name and the graphics have become a little stale. It is now time for a change.

Fellow student 劉一強 John Liu and class president 張智慧 Chang Chi-hui recently suggested a new name, “美聲之旅.” In English, “A Voyage into Bel Canto.” In Italian, “Un Viaggio nel Bel Canto.”

Therefore with veteran classmate 秦桂英 Cynthia Chin’s guidance, I have redesigned the flyer and program accordingly.

Maestro Plácido Domingo’s Operalia, The World Opera Competition, agrees. The 2013 Operalia in Verona has also picked Ao Li as its Men’s Category First Prize winner.

For those unfamiliar with Operalia:

Plácido Domingo’s Operalia, The World Opera Competition, was founded in 1993 by Plácido Domingo to discover and help launch the careers of the most promising young opera singers of today. His goal is to attract singers of all voice tessituras and from every country in the world ranging from 18 to 32 years of age, to have them audition and be heard by a panel of distinguished international opera personalities, in the most prestigious and competitive showcase in the world.

“Operalia is like the Olympic games for the opera,” Domingo said in a press release issued by the competition. “Singers from all over the world compete to get to the finals and to win.”

The 20th Anniversary of Plácido Domingo’s Operalia, The World Opera Competition, was celebrated on August 25th 2013, at the Final Concert of 2013 competition in Verona.

Maestro Domingo’s Operalia, the most important competition of its kind in the world, has affirmed Maestro Ren’s impeccable artistic judgment.

Congratulations, Maestro Ren! Ritorna Vincitor!

Minnie, dalla mia casa son partito

Sung by Tito Gobbi, Italian baritone

Sung by Cornell McNeil, American baritone

Sung by Lino Puglisi, Italian baritone

Sung by Chang Yu Sang, Korean baritone

Minnie, dalla mia casa son partito
from the opera “La fanciulla del West” (The Girl of the West)
Music by Giacomo Puccini
Lyrics by Guelfo Civinini and Carlo Zangarini

Mi son messo in cammino

Translated into English

Minnie, when I departed from my home
Beyond the mountains, on the shores of another sea:

No one felt regret, Minnie, or followed me,
No one shed a tear at my leaving!
No one loved me, and I loved no one.
Nothing gave me pleasure!
Deep in my breast I have the heart of a gambler,
Embittered, poisoned, Which laughs at love and destiny.

I began a journey,
Attracted solely by the fascination of gold,
This alone has not deceived me;
But for a kiss from you, I’d give away my treasure!

Phrasing

(White Cloud Song)

Sung by 孫湘涵 Victoria Sun

It’s depressing how many crummy renditions of this great song have been uploaded, mostly by choral groups utterly clueless about how this song should be sung. Few solo renditions exist. Fewer are listenable. This rendition by Chinese soprano Victoria Sun was the best that could be found online.

Sobre las olas (The Loveliest Night of the Year)

Sung by Pedro Infante, Mexican actor and singer

Orchestral performance by the Berliner Symphoniker, conducted by Robert Stolz

Piano solo by Waldteufel78, Swiss pianist

Sobre las olas (Over the Waves)
Music by Juventino P. Rosas, Mexican composer
1888

Spanish Lyrics as sung by Pedro Infante:

[ Chorus:

[ Chorus ]

Google Machine Translation into English:

[ Chorus:
In the vastness of the waves I saw you floating
and went to save you, for your life lost life.
Your sweet vision, recorded indelibly in my soul
the tender passion, the joy and peace I stole. ]

If in my pain, your refuge came to disturb
I will follow you with love, not neglect to listen to you woman.
The wind will take you, the groans of my heart
and always repeated, the accents of my song.

The tempest in its fury the sea
The lightning and thunder are loud
But I can only faintly hear
the storm in here with your love.

Everywhere I go, your memory is my guide
at night it is my faith, in the day it is my sun.
My breath is my ideal, or my pain shared
my aching grief, is for you for your love.

With my groaning, I sent you my heart
and in my eyes, I sent my being.
But no, you do not want pity
I want to love, or perish.

Words fall into rhyme / A-ny-time you are hol-ding me near /
When you are in love / It’s the love-li-est night of the year /

[ Chorus:
Walt-zing a-long in the blue / Like a breeze drif-ting o-ver the sand /
Thrilled by the won-der of you / And the won-der-ful touch of your hand /
And my heart starts to beat / Like a child when a birth-day is near /
So kiss me my sweet / It’s the love-li-est night of the year / ]

[ Instrumental:
When you are in love / It’s the love-li-est night of the year /
Stars twin-kle a-bove / And you al-most can touch them from here /

When you are in love / It’s the love-li-est night of the year / ]

Meine Lippen, sie küssen so heiß

Meine Lippen, sie küssen so heiß (My lips kiss with such fire)
From the 1934 light opera “Guiditta”
Music by Franz Lehar
Lyrics Paul Knepler and Fritz Löhner-Beda

In meinen Adern drin,

dann sah man alle Augen glühn!

Sie ist in mir aufs neu erwacht,
ich hab’ das gleiche Los.
Ich tanz’ wie sie um Mitternacht
Und fühl das eine blos:

Meine Lippen, sie küssen so heiß!

Translated into English:

I myself do not know,
why they always speak of love.
why when men are near me,
they look into my eyes and kiss my hands.

I myself do not know,
why they speak of magic,
that no man can resist,
when he sees me or passes by.

But when the lights glow red
at the midnight hour,
when they listen to my song,
then I understand why:

My lips kiss with such fire,
My limbs are supple and white,
In the stars it is written:
You must kiss me, you must love me!

My feet hover and glide,
my eyes enchant and sparkle,
and I dance as if possessed for I know,
that my lips, they kiss with such fire!

In my veins there flows
the blood of a dancer.
My beautiful mother was
Queen of the Dance in the Golden Alcazar.

She was so beautiful,
I often see her in dreams.
When she beat her tambourine in a wild dance,
all eyes smouldered!

She lives again in me,
I share her destiny.
Like her I dance at midnight,
and deep inside I know:

My lips, they kiss with such fire!

The snow has cleared the sky is clear / plum blossom scent abounds /
Riding a donkey over a bridge / the bells ring out: ding dong /
ring ding dong / ring ding dong / ring ding dong / ring ding dong!
We pick the flowers and put them in vases /
Stay with me, listen to the melody of the harp / together we pass good times!

On the rugged mountain trails / plum blossoms bloom all around /
All the way the wind is cold / the bells ring out: ding dong /
ring ding dong / ring ding dong / ring ding dong / ring ding dong!
Our hearts are drunk with the flowers scent /
Clarity and tranquility fill my heart / together we pass good times!

Sung by Anthony Kearns, Irish tenor

Dein ist mein ganzes herz
from the 1929 operetta Das Land des Lächelns
Music by Franz Lehár
Lyrics by Fritz Löhner-Beda and Ludwig Herzer

dir, dir allein! Wie wunderbar
ist dein leuchtendes Haar!
Traumschön und sehnsuchtsbang
ist dein strahlender Blick.
Hör ich der Stimme Klang,
ist es so wie Musik.

English Lyrics, Singable

You are my heart’s delight,
And where you are, I long to be
You make the darkness bright,
When like a star you shine on me
Shine, then, my whole life through
Your life divine brings me hope anew
That dreams of mine may at last come true
And I shall hear you whisper, “I love you.”

In dreams when night is falling
I seem to hear you calling
For you have cast a net around me
And ‘neath a magic spell hath bound me
Yours, yours alone
A wondrous air is your beautiful hair
Bright as a summer sky
is the night in your eyes
Soft as a sparkling star
is the warmth of my love.
