English translation

My wrath bristles through my helmet, the rain stops as I stand by the rail;
I look up towards the sky and let loose a passionate roar.
At age thirty my deeds are nothing but dust, my journey has taken me over eight thousand li
So do not sit by idly, for young men will grow old in regret.
The Humiliation of Jing Kang still lingers,
When will the pain of his subjects ever end?
Let us ride our chariots through the Helan Pass,
There we shall feast and drink barbarian flesh and blood.
Let us begin anew to recover our old mountains and rivers, before paying tribute to the Emperor.

Guantanamera
Music by José Fernández Diaz, aka Joselíto Fernández
Lyrics by José Fernández Diaz, based on Versos Sencillos by José Martí

Yo soy un hombre sincero
De donde crece la palma
Y antes de morirme quiero
Echar mis versos del alma
Guantanamera / guajira Guantanamera

Mi verso es de un verde claro
Y de un carmín encendido
Mi verso es de un ciervo herido
Que busca en el monte amparo
Guantanamera / guajira Guantanamera

Cultivo una rosa blanca
En julio como en enero
Para el amigo sincero
Que me da su mano franca
Guantanamera / guajira Guantanamera

Y para el cruel que me arranca
El corazon con que vivo
Cardo ni ortiga cultivo
Cultivo la rosa blanca
Guantanamera / guajira Guantanamera

Con los pobres de la tierra
Quiero yo mi suerte echar
El arroyo de la sierra
Me complace más que el mar
Guantanamera / guajira Guantanamera

English Translation:

I am a sincere man
From where the palm tree grows
And before dying I want
To share the verses of my soul.

My verse is light green
And it is flaming crimson
My verse is a wounded deer
Who seeks refuge on the mountain.

This third verse was never part of the song, Guantanamera, but was written in “Versos Sencillos”

I cultivate a white rose
In July as in January
For the sincere friend
Who gives me his honest hand.

This fourth verse is translated during the song as sung by Pete Seeger & Arlo Guthrie[3]

And for the cruel one
who would tear out this heart with which I live
I do not cultivate nettles nor thistles
I cultivate a white rose

Final verse of song, as published:

With the poor people of the earth
I want to share my fate
The brook of the mountains
Gives me more pleasure than the sea

Ol’ Man River
Music by Jerome Kern
Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein
From the Broadway musical “Showboat”
1927

There’s an old man / called the Mis-sis-sip-pi /
That’s the old man / that I want to be /
What does he care / if the world’s got trou-bles? /
What does he care / if the land ain’t free? /

Old man ri-ver / that old man ri-ver /
He must know some-thing / but don’t say no-thing /
He just keeps roll-ing / he keeps on roll-ing a-long /

He don’t plant ta-ters / he don’t plant cot-ton /
And them that plants them / is soon for-gotten /
But old man ri-ver / he just keeps roll-ing a-long /

You and me / we sweat and strain /
body all ach-ing / and wracked with pain /
Tote that barge! / Lift that bale! /
Get a lit-tle drunk / and you land in jai-ail /

I gets wea-ry / and sick of try-ing /
I’m tired of liv-ing / and scared of dy-ing /
But old man ri-ver / he just keeps roll-ing a-a-a-long!
