The Republic of China Centennial
Mondial Chinese Vocalist Concours Concert

Talented singers previously discovered by the Mondial Chinese Vocalist Concours will perform in a live concert commemorating the 100 anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China. Included will be well-known patriotic songs about the Huanghuagang Uprising, the Xinhai Revolution, and the War of Resistance Against Japan. The performers will pay tribute to the perseverance of the Chinese people and to the suffering endured by the nation since its founding a century ago. The Mondial Chinese Vocalist Concours is the brainchild of Mr. Ma Ying-jeou. It has been held six times over the past 14 years. It has discovered and nurtured talented Chinese singers in Italy, Great Britain, the United States, Poland, France, Australia, Germany, Argentina, and all over Asia.

This year marks the nation’s 100th anniversary. The Mondial Chinese Vocalist Concours has invited past award winners, from home and abroad, to participate. They will perform well-known Chinese and foreign songs, as well as patriotic songs commemorating the spirit of the Huanghuagang martyrs, the Xinhai Revolution, and the War of Resistance Against Japan, encouraging people to remember the past and fight for the future. The music world is holding this event to celebrate the nation’s centennial. Since its founding, the Republic of China has endured epic struggles. It nearly perished from the earth. These moving and provocative songs, which express its troubled fate, will be performed by award-winning Chinese singers, and accompanied by the highly-skilled Taipei Central Choir and the Kaohsiung Taiwan Choir. Together they will honor of the nation’s difficult birth and rise to prosperity.

Current and past winners of the Mondial Chinese Vocalist Concours, from home and abroad, will be accompanied by renowned pianists from Europe. This international cultural exchange will enhance the quality of the performances, commemorate the founding of the nation, and encourage greater appreciation of the music. Performances will be held in major cities in northern, central, and south Taiwan. Three performances will be held: one in Taipei, one in Taichung, and one in Tainan. Outstanding singers with a wealth of onstage experience will be joined by world-class accompanists in this rare international event.

The program will include solo and group performances. Patriotic songs about the Huanghuagang Uprising, the Xinhai Revolution, and the War of Resistance Against Japan will express our people’s determination to establish a free republic, and their fighting spirit amidst national suffering. Contemporary Chinese songs will encourage future creativity. Classic international songs will include arias from famous Western operas, Chinese and foreign art songs, and traditional and creative folk songs.

Three concerts will be held. The first in Taipei, at Zhongshan Hall, with the the Taipei Symphony Orchestra (December 10 7:30 pm), The second in Taichung, with the Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra (December 11 2:30 pm). The third in Tainan, at the Tainan University Ya Ying Hall (December 12 7:30 pm). Admission to the three concerts is free. Past winners of the Mondial Chinese Vocalist Concours will perform. They include:

Xu Linqiang is a tenor from the United States. He was a first prize winner in the first Mondial Chinese Vocalist Concours. He has performed at numerous world-class venues, including the Royal Opera House, the Vienna State Opera, the Polish National Opera, the New York City Opera, and the Rome Opera House.

Fu Shang-chen is a soprano from Taiwan. She was a first prize winner in the second Mondial Chinese Vocalist Concours. She teaches at the Taipei Municipal University of Education.

Wang Dongjuan is a baritone from Beijing. He was a third prize winner in the third Mondial Chinese Vocalist Concours. He was a first prize winner in the British International Competition, and currently performs with the Deutsche Staatsoper.

Chou Po-ku is a tenor from Taipei. He was a rookie prize winner in the fifth Mondial Chinese Vocalist Concours. He was a third prize winner in last year’s International Francesco Paolo Tosti Singing Competition in Japan. He is currently a graduate student at National Taiwan Normal University.

Keng Li is a soprano from Kaohsiung. She was a second prize winner in the sixth Mondial Chinese Vocalist Concours. She was awarded a Tosti MasterClass Scholarship, and is currently studying music at the Rome Music Research Institute.

Liu Meng-chieh is a soprano from Taipei. She was a rookie prize winner in the sixth International Francesco Paolo Tosti Singing Competition. She was awarded a two year Tosti Institute scholarship. She is a member of the Italian Provincial Opera Performance Group, and was awarded the young singer prize at the International Francesco Paolo Tosti Singing Competition in Italy.

Chao Fang-hao is a baritone from Penghu. He was a rookie prize winner in the fifth Mondial Chinese Vocalist Concours. He has performed in numerous operas in Germany. He is currently attending the Liszt Academy of Music in Weimar, Germany.

Li Nan is a soprano from Shenyang. He was a winner of the creative song prize in the sixth Mondial Chinese Vocalist Concours. He is currently working towards his Masters degree at the Guangzhou Xinghai Conservatory of Music.

Hong Meifeng is a soprano from Malaysia. She was a rookie prize winner in the fourth Mondial Chinese Vocalist Concours. She was awarded a Sydney Academy of Music Scholarship. After graduation, she returned to Malaysia to teach at the University of the Arts.

Wang Xin is a tenor from Shandong. He was a first prize winner in the fifth Mondial Chinese Vocalist Concours. He has been awarded a one year contract with the Marseille City Opera in France. He has also been admitted to the French National Opera in Strasbourg. He is currently performing in France and Germany.

慶祝建國一百年——世華聲樂大賽優勝者音樂會簡介

由世華大賽歷屆發掘才華走向世界樂壇的華人歌唱家聯合演唱，是以歌聲歡慶建國一百年的盛會。曲目包括世界經典名曲和『黃花崗、辛亥革命、抗戰』史詩題材的愛國歌曲，唱出建國一百年來我人民建立民主的堅忍不拔和國家遭受苦難時國人的悲憤戰鬥精神。
世華聲樂大賽由馬英九先生倡議，十四年來共舉辦六屆，成功地發掘、推薦華人歌唱新秀在義、英、美、波蘭、法、奧、德、阿根廷和亞洲演唱。

欣逢建國一百年大喜，特別邀請海內外世華聲樂大賽歷屆得獎優勝者除了演唱中外名曲，特別選唱讚頌『黃花崗烈士、辛亥革命和抗戰精神』史詩的愛國歌曲，發抒國人緬懷過去的情懷，激勵國人奮發向上的毅力和意志，是音樂界熱烈慶祝建國一百年而舉辦的活動。 建國以來，根據可歌可泣奮戰建國的史詩和國家遭受幾乎淪亡命運苦難的內容而寫成的動人歌曲，唱起來扣人心弦，引人深思。由獲獎並在國外有成就的傑出華人演唱家，和台北中央合唱團和高雄台灣合唱團聯合演出，呈現高水準的演唱，共同緬懷過去艱辛建國的事蹟和慶祝成功打造了光輝安樂的國家。
